Exploring Peasholm Park: A Day of Fun and Adventure in Scarborough

Peasholm Park is a firm favourite with visitors and locals - we love it so much we created a Nature Trail and Activity Pack to help families really enjoy a full day exploring the park and glen.

There are so many things to do in the park, we've created a summary of our favourite activities.

1. Peasholm Park Nature, Fairy & treasure Trail

Of course our favourite thing to do is exploring the entire park with our self-guided walking tour. It contains something to occupy everyone - with both educational resources and imaginative trails, you're sure to discover something new every time you complete it. Subscribing will get you access to the trail and activity pack for 7 days, so you can download and complete the activity sheets as many times as you like.

We've put together a nature trail and wildlife survey to help you identify and learn about some of our favourite wildlife - including feeding guides for ducks, geese, birds, swans, squirrels and more.

An updated tree trail is also included pointing out the champion trees along the way. And to get your imagination flowing, we've included some info on the Peasholm fairies and pixies - make sure you make a wish when you pass over their special wishing spots, and keep an eye out for little packets of fairy food - sprinkle them around the park so the fairies don't get hungry.

A treasure trail word search will get your brains going - follow the clues to find the hidden word in the park. Click here to view the Peasholm Park Nature Trail.

2. Dragon & Swan Boats

Embark on a whimsical adventure by taking a ride on the dragon and swan boats that gracefully glide across Peasholm Lake. The dragon boats, inspired by Chinese mythology, add a touch of magic to the experience, while the serene swan boats provide a romantic and picturesque setting. Whether you're seeking a family outing or a romantic escapade, these boat rides are sure to create lasting memories.

3. Feeding the Squirrels, Gulls, Pigeons & Ducks

Peasholm Park is not just a place for human enjoyment; it's also a home to a variety of adorable animals. The park features charming duck ponds where you can interact with and feed the resident ducks, geese, and other feathered friends. It's an ideal activity for families with young children, providing an opportunity for hands-on, educational fun.

You can learn all about the diets of different birds, ducks and woodland creatures in our nature trail - because bread is actually really bad for most of them!

4. Climbing to the Top of Peasholm Island

For those seeking a bit of adventure and stunning panoramic views, a climb to the top of the island in the middle of the lake is a must. The island is crowned by a beautiful pagoda, offering a vantage point to gaze upon the lush surroundings and the shimmering waters below. The climb is a bit of a challenge, but the reward at the top is well worth the effort.

5. Naval Warfare Display

Prepare to be captivated by the awe-inspiring naval warfare display, a unique attraction that sets Peasholm Park apart from other parks. The miniature naval battles, complete with model ships and pyrotechnics, unfold on the lake, recreating historic naval skirmishes. The attention to detail and the scale of the display make it a riveting experience for history enthusiasts and families alike - and at almost 100 years old, it is the oldest show of its kind in the country.

The show is only on 3 times a week in the summer season, so make sure you double check the timetable beforehand. Part of the park is also closed while the show is on (the section around the main lake, including cafe and toilets) so be prepared for no access to these facilities if you're not watching the show.

6. Picnic in the Park

After a day filled with excitement, find a cozy spot in the park to unwind and enjoy a leisurely picnic. The well-maintained lawns and tranquil ambiance provide the perfect setting for a relaxing meal with friends and family. Pack your favorite snacks, sandwiches, and refreshing beverages to savor while basking in the natural beauty that surrounds you. Just be careful the gulls don't steal your sarnies - the best way to scare them off is by staring straight at them. Gulls are opportunist thieves, so if they know you're watching them they'll back off.

If you haven't brought any snacks you could try the cafe by the seating area around the main lake, or nip to the One-Stop shop across the road on Columbus Ravine. There is another One-Stop by the entrance to the beach which may be closer if you're at the North side of the park.

Peasholm Park in Scarborough is a hidden gem offering a perfect blend of natural splendour and recreational activities. From dragon boat rides and animal encounters to scenic climbs and captivating naval displays, the park invites you to create cherished memories. So, gather your loved ones, pack a picnic, and immerse yourself in the enchanting wonders of Peasholm Park for a day of fun and adventure.
